I seem to ovulate based on the fact that I experience mid-cycle pain and sometimes spotting, and I often though not always experience fertile cervical mucus. However, I still havn’t become pregnant after over a year of trying. I suffer with PMS and my periods vary by no more than a week each month, but, they’re not exactly regular. Could this be the only thing making me fail? How can I fix mild-irregularity?

2 Michelle { 09.11.08 at 4:41 am }

Thanks for your question Lucifera. You mention that you seem to ovulate based on mid-cycle pain, my first suggestion is that you use an ovulation predictor kit to determine when exactly you are ovulating. I know it can get a little much month after month spending money on OPKs but they are definitely worth it. Without knowing exactly when you ovulate you really could be missing vital windows of opportunity to conceive.

Spotting is not normal, although experienced by so many women, so there is room to improve your fertility. An excess of estrogen can result in spotting. PMS is also a sign that things could be improved. Many PMS symptoms can be linked to low levels of progesterone, inadequate thyroid function often caused by stress, lack of vital nutrients and even blood sugar irregularities.

The good news is that yes, this could be all that is stopping you conceiving as these things reduce your chances of conception. It doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant, it just means it could be taking a lot longer than it has to. You can balance your hormones to help regulate your cycle.

So if you haven’t already, you need to start taking preconception vitamin and mineral supplements. This is a boring basic that so many women wish to bypass. You really can’t afford to bypass this though. The investment into your ‘fertility bank account’ needs to be consistent, excellent in quality and unrelenting. There are so many things that ‘withdraw’ from your fertility bank account every day so you must consistently make deposits into it to offset these.

Magnesium and vitamin B6 along with herbal remedies could help in regulating your hormones. Some herbs that are renowned for assisting female fertility and PMS are Chastetree (Vitex), Passion Flower, Cramp Bark and Red Sage. Rosemary extract has also been linked with the beneficial breakdown of estrogen to help create a more balanced ratio. You should speak to your local natural health store consultant who will be able to determine some good quality supplements and herbs that will help you. One note on Vitex, this should NEVER be taken with the fertility drug CLOMID, they have been shown to cancel each other out.

It goes without saying also that a ‘clean living’ lifestyle is a must when it comes to trying to conceive. Cutting out alcohol, smoking, caffeine (yes chocolate included), stress and addressing weight issues if there are any and keeping to a strictly healthy diet are a must.

All of the above applies to both partners; sperm has a critical role as is obvious and its quality can just as easily be impacted by lack of nutrients and lifestyle effects.

If you have any other specific questions or would like to give me more detail on your cycle, ie temperatures, length, blood flow etc then I will be able to analyse your situation in a little more detail.

I hope this has helped.

Hi well my husband and I have been trying to have a baby but every time we attempt to conceive my body seems to reject his sperm, does that mean I have a problem, or does that affect in some way?

4 Michelle { 09.12.08 at 1:46 am }

Hi Geovana, Thanks for your question.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by ‘rejecting sperm’. Some women’s bodies do kill sperm but that is tested for by your doctor who would then be able to advise you from there.

On the other hand if you mean that you ‘lose’ sperm via leakage after intercourse then that is nothing to be too worried about. Sperm can make their way very quickly to where they need to go, they know what they’re meant to do so to speak. There are some positions however that assist gravity and the sperm’s journey and others that don’t.

Avoid positions where you are upright as gravity will work against the sperm. The missionary position would be a suitable option.

Many women try raising their pelvis up by putting pillows or similar under their hips after intercourse, it wouldn’t hurt to do this for say 15 minutes. I have never found any evidence though that this makes any difference but as I say it can’t hurt either.

Hi michelle,

I been tryin to conceive for the pass 8 months, and nothing yet! I get desperate because I want a baby so bad, Im the oldest in the house and no babies yet..I have 2 brothers that have kids.. My question is..
I have a fibroid in my right ovary..Is that the reason I cant pregnant?

I try on my ovulation days but nothing :-(

6 Geisha { 09.17.08 at 5:04 pm }

Is that the reason I cant get pregant*****

7 Michelle { 09.18.08 at 3:47 am }

Hi Geisha,
Thanks for your question.

Fibroids can indeed affect your fertility. It is thought that fibroids come about due to abnormal estrogen levels which play a part in the initial stages of fibroid growth.

There are other reasons that can promote the growth of fibroids such as the environment, general hormone imbalance and more often a number of things combined.

The good news is that you can balance your hormones to reduce the negative side effects of fibroids. As with any conception plan I always recommend that a course of preconception care vitamin and mineral supplements be taken every day for both partners. In your case this is even more vital. You need to give your body everything you can to help it balance out the estrogen that could be increasing your risk of further fibroid growth.

It has been shown in women who have experienced menopause that their fibroids simply shrink and disappear which is quite possibly linked to the reduction in their estrogen levels. So hormone balance should be your number one priority.

Some of the key vitamins you should ensure you are taking are vitamin A, C and E.

These particular vitamins are recommended by experts who say that they can assist with normal cell reproduction and help control symptoms of fibroids such as heavy and painful menstrual cycles.

Herbal remedies can be very powerful and should not be overlooked. Head down to your local health store specialist and get some guidance on a good fertility formula. Putting some money into this area of herbs and supplements is money well spent. I must add though that you need to take supplements and herbs consistently for atleast three months as that is approximatley the time it takes for the full maturation so to speak, of ova and sperm. If you can afford to I would take them until pregnant and then cut back to the basic pregnancy supplements.

Is your fibroid the reason you can’t get pregnant? Excellent question however the answer is not black and white. When you have a fibroid like you mention, yes it will affect your chances but more importantly is to realise that the fibroid is a symptom of a hormonal imbalance...(although opinions are varied on this). So I would go as far as to say that your overall reproductive health has the potential to be improved greatly which is really good news…you have something you can work on.

As mentioned above, by consistently taking herbs and supplements, you will improve your hormone balance.

And as always, I must mention that your and your partner’s lifestyle habits will also greatly affect your reproductive health, so a clean fresh diet that limits caffeine, alcohol and smoking is a given. Don’t over-exercise either as too much exercise will rob your body of much needed vitamins and minerals. A brisk walk every other day is sufficient whilst trying to conceive.

8 Geisha { 09.19.08 at 1:20 am }

Im taking Vitamin A,C AND E, but nothin The doctor told me the samething..Im taking care of my health and eatin wise..but it seems like its nothin..I checked myself to see if i could conceive and my husband and they say yes..but I dont know thats why im confused..thanks for ur help though

9 Michelle { 09.19.08 at 10:40 am }

Thanks for the further information Geisha.

So you are doing the main things in regards to the vitamins for fibroids which is fabulous. You should also be taking a very high quality vitamin and mineral supplement specifically designed for preconception care. The reason it must be specifically for preconception is that the quantity of the vital elements will be much greater than in a normal supplement.

As mentioned earlier, I really cannot stress enough the use of herbs as well. Fertility herbs will not only help your fibroids, but will have an enormous impact on your overall fertility.

I’ll assume you are already doing the points I’ve raised above but if you aren’t anything else I suggest won’t be nearly as potent as if it were combined with the basics of supplements and herbs.

A zinc test for both you and your partner should be your next port of call. If zinc is a problem your chances of conceiving really are low. Your local drug store or health store consultant will be able to assist you in how to do a zinc test. It is simple, cheap and easy to fix if you are deficient. PLEASE NOTE: ZINC MUST ONLY BE TAKEN AS DIRECTED. FOLLOW THE EXACT DAILY DOSES SUGGESTED BY YOUR PHARMACIST OR NATURAL HEALTH CONSULTANT AFTER PERFORMING THE ZINC TASTE TEST.

Remember, both partners must be taking supplements, herbs and zinc (if needed) every single day without fail. Let me know how you go with the zinc tests if you end up taking them.

I am currently taking Fertility Friend a multi-vitamin especially formulated for women along with Folic Acid and DHEA 25 mg. Question am I taking to much to help with getting pregnant? I am 36yrs. old and have been ttc for the past year. I did get pregnant only to miscarriage in two weeks. I read internet articles and books seeking advice and feel a sense of despair as to if I will get pregnant again. Advice Please!
Thanks
Joy

11 Michelle { 09.19.08 at 2:11 pm }

Hi Joy, Thanks for visiting and posting your question.

Firstly, I am sorry to hear about your miscarriage, I know a little about the heartbreak that can cause as I have been through it too. The fact you have actually fallen pregnant before is the good news. You probably realise logically that if you can do it once you can do it again.:)

It is great to see that you are taking some specific supplements for preconception, keep them up, this is one of the best investments you can make. Are you taking too much? From what you’ve told me I would say no. In fact you could probably take more, it is difficult in this modern age to have an over abundance of all the good things we need in our bodies.

You don’t mention herbs and I wonder if the supplements you are taking include any? I’ve written about herbs in my last answer to Geisha above. They really are worth looking into.

Are you charting your cycles? If so I would be interested in the details. Miscarriage can be caused by a great number of things and often we are told that there was probably something that was genetically amiss…..cold comfort in the grief of losing a baby. I guess the thing to know is that progesterone plays a very very significant role in sustaining a pregnancy. A slight drop in progesterone just below the threshold and the worst can happen.

If you are charting you can get an idea from your temperature readings as to whether your progesterone levels are too low. Charting is certainly not an exact science but is a very good place to start searching for clues.

Some questions to ask are:
Is your menstrual cycle length within normal range every other month?
How are you determining your ovulation day and what approach to conception attempts are you taking…ie every other day, every day?

Fist cab off the rank should be seeking out some fertility herbs. I know it can feel like you’re ‘overdoing it’ when trying to conceive, what with popping supplements left right and centre, living at the drug store buying ovulation kits and pregnancy tests and now herbs too! But conceiving is a delicate dance that requires so many aspects to be in sync for the ultimate miracle to take place.

I have also outlined in some previous answers the importance of zinc and also the importance of both partners to be taking supplements and herbs. Ensure whilst looking into fertility herbs to find out about you and your partner taking a zinc taste test which will determine if you are zinc deficient or not. It is easy to fix if you are but you MUST follow the directions on zinc dosage very carefully from your pharmacist or health store consultant. (Note:Sperm quality is highly reliant on zinc.)

If you want to share any further detail on your charts etc or have further questions then feel free to post here as you need.

12 Brandi { 09.22.08 at 4:21 pm }

I was wondering how long it usually takes to get pregnant after stoppin birth controll pills

13 Michelle { 09.23.08 at 1:06 am }

Hi Brandi, Thanks for visiting.

For some women falling pregnant after stopping the pill is immediate but for others it can really take some time for their body to ‘normalise’ so to speak.

It really depends on how long you’ve been taking the pill for, what type of pill you were on and whether or not you have generally been in good health overall and reproductively.

Women who use the pill to ’settle down’ their menstrual cycle are more likely to have a little more trouble conceiving as the cause of the initial irregularities could still be present.

Your body needs time to take over full control of its hormones so be patient if you can. Ova and sperm take apporximately three months to reach full maturation so stopping the pill today will mean that in three months time you will generally have a ‘clean bill of health’ so to speak. It is often suggested to not even try to conceive for a minimum of three months after stopping the pill for this very reason.

During the three month ‘waiting period’ is a fantastic opportunity to follow a full blown preconception plan. Lots of potent preconception vitamin and mineral supplements, fertililty herbs and strict healthy lifestyle and eating habits. Gentle exercise along with relaxation will do wonders for your reproductive and overall health.

If you start with these things over a three month period you could very well get pregnant the next time you try. Lots of luck to you.

Michelle.

14 Geisha { 09.23.08 at 11:40 pm }

Hey Michelle,
Yes its my first time to get pregnant..

15 Geisha { 09.23.08 at 11:40 pm }

So that mean its hard to get prenant?

16 Michelle { 09.24.08 at 1:07 am }

Hi Geisha,
If you follow a strict plan along the lines of some of the things I’ve already pointed out then it really won’t be that hard to get pregnant.

If you need a very detailed, step by step plan to follow then you can use the plan I’ve laid out that shows you the exact method I used to get pregnant in under four months at the age of 39, (and that was after a year of unexplained infertility).

Given your fibroid I suggest that if you stray from a very strict plan then yes it will most likely be more difficult to get pregnant. If you are prepared to do everything it will take then follow my plan, but as I point out on the order page, this is a plan not for the feint hearted. It must be followed to a tee to be sure every aspect of your reproductive health is being nurtured. You can read a little about my plan here.

17 nilly { 10.28.08 at 2:24 am }

me and mah partner have been trying to conceive for a year now but still no luck i am really wanting to get pregnant Now. i was on the jab last year and dont know if it has affected me from conceiving i have irregular periods also. please help me. i want to become a mother

18 Michelle { 10.29.08 at 6:08 am }

Hi Nilly, thanks for visiting. The first thing you need to do is work on normalising your periods. Irregular periods will definitely slow down your progress.

Depending on how irregular they are, for example how long/short etc, will impact just how much this is affecting your chances of conceiving. If you have cycles that are well outside the norm and then you manage to normalise them, your chances of getting pregnant could be as much as four times greater.

The best way to start balancing hormones is with a strict healthy diet and lifestyle along with a very high quality vitamin, mineral and herbal supplement daily for both partners.

Of course you and your partner need to be sure that you have no reproductive medical conditions such as endometriosis, low sperm count etc. Having a full check up is important especially now considering you’ve tried for over a year.

Have a look around at the other answers above and my other posts here on the blog, you will find lots of little details to help you along.

Goodluck this month Nilly.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for responsing to my question. You had a few questions of your own in answering my question. So here we go; as for herbs the fertility supplement in which I am taking contains a Herbal Proprietary Bleand called PABA containing; Red Clover Leaf, Sibesian Gingo Boloka and Chasteberry Vitex just to name a few. Along of course with the nomal Folic Acid, Vitamins, C,D, E and B, it also has some Zinc, Magnesium and Iron as well. I am also drinking Gertiol to enusre I geting enough of the Iron and Zinc.

My cycles are constitent evey month ranging from 26-28 days. As for charting I’m not quite sure how that process works. I do however use my calendar and count the number of days of my cycle and the number of days between cycles, that is how I got the 26-28 days. However since taking these herbal supplements the length of my cycle has shorten for 5 days to 4 days. Is that normal?

I am currently using ovulation kits to help determine when I am ovulating, which has been quite costly but well worth it. I am very sexually active around and during that time. If not everyday leading up to ovulation every other day and defintely on the day of ovulation. Thanks for your help in my journey to motherhood.

Anxiously awaiting a positive pregancy test result
Joy

20 Michelle { 11.01.08 at 9:16 am }

Hi Joy,
Great to have you back. First off you are doing yourself so many favours, that is great to hear. All those vitamins, minerals and herbs are doing you the world of good, please don’t stop them they are very important. What else is important though is that your partner starts taking them too if not already doing so.

You mention that your supplements have zinc in them. You should still perform a zinc taste test to be sure you have adequate levels…if you don’t the amount found in your supplements won’t be enough to recover it to normal. The reason I say that is due to zinc being ‘unhelpful’ if taken when not needed. The amount in your daily intake would only be enough to maintain your current levels as it would be rare for any manufacturer to add high quantities due to the danger it can pose.

So if you haven’t already, head on down to the health store, buy a zinc taste test and follow the instructions. Get the specialist there to help with quantities to take if you have a deficiency. This is one thing that your partner must do, zinc is so vital to sperm health that with low bodily stores you could be trying to get pregnant forever more, yet zinc is so easily brought back to where it should be by a simple liquid form supplement. Please follow the quantities given by your specialist to the letter and ensure you let them know what other supplements you are taking and the levels of zinc in them.

Your cycles are a very good length. Your cycle shortening to four days is nothing to worry about I don’t think, just your body adjusting to the benefits of the herbs etc I imagine.

Knowing the length of your cycle is critical to understanding your reproductive health, along with that though is a lot more we can find out. When you’re getting your zinc taste test :), grab a digital Basal Body Thermometer. From then on take your temperature under your tongue each morning before moving out of bed. You need to have had three uninterupted hours of sleep for the reading to be meaningful. Don’t move around much before taking the reading, just reach out for the BBT and pop it under your tongue. Record the reading. When you have a pattern over one cycle come back and let me know about the temperatures you have. From there I can get a good understanding of what else your cylce might be telling you.

Ovulation kits, herbs, supplements and avoiding bad food and bad habits are your critical keys. Stick with that plan and you are really doing fantastic, your partner must get involved in all the above too, oh except the ovulation kits of course.

Ovulation kits are worth it and I’m glad you’ve recognised that, please stick with them. I’ve just written an article on timing so have added a few excerpts below for you to read.

Timing Intercourse:
There are three days a month that are proven in studies to offer the most chance of conceiving:
- Two days prior to ovulation.
- One day prior to ovulation.
- The day of ovulation.
In one study there was not one pregnancy recorded for women who had intercourse any day after ovulation.

Joy I hope the above helps you and I’d love to hear back again on your progress. You are putting in lots of effort and doing the right things, the more you do and the longer you do it for the more all that good snowballs into a great deal of positive energy for your fertility. Good luck this month.

I was wondering if a women in her 40’s can expect to get pregnant if she keeps trying if she knows she is ovulating. I have been trying for 8 months and nothing but I am 43. I have now been doing progestrine 7 days after ovulate and the numbers show that I have ovulated. Are my hopes good because I am ovualting every month or slim because of my age?

hi i had a question… me and my husband are trying to concieve however its been a year and havent been able to. i was told i have hpv and ascus i had a colposcopy done and all. i also have irregular periods are these the reasons why i havent gotten pregnant or could it be something else. what do i do to get pregnant?

25 Michelle { 11.07.08 at 12:09 pm }

Hi kara hume,
Thanks for visiting my blog.

You’re off to a flying start if you’re still ovulating so there is certainly hope. Your age of course does play a factor, that really impacts on the quantity of eggs. The good news is that quality will win out over quantity.

So the best thing you can do is boost the quality of the egg reserves you do have. I have several posts and answers above about preconception care etc and that is for both partners.

There are specific blood tests you can have to check your FSH levels etc which will also give you a good idea of how your reproductive health is travelling.

Some women will have little chance at the age of 37 others will still conceive at 45, genetics and your overall previous and current lifestyle play a major part in this.

Like I said though, you really do have a chance if you’re ovulating but time really is important, you need to act quickly. Personally if I was you I would track down the most experienced, sought after Chinese Medicine Practitioner; combine herbal formulas, accupuncture and strict healthy lifestyle choices and you could see tremendous outcomes. Don’t underestimate these options. They might seem a little costly but compared to IVF…well it doesn’t compare and the outcomes could very well be much more positive.

If you have any further questions feel free to post them here. Good luck.

26 Michelle { 11.07.08 at 12:35 pm }

Hi there adny, thanks for your question.

I know you are sad and I completely understand that, I tried for over a year too and was in a terrible state at the five month mark; by twelve months it can become unbearable. I really think there is hope so let’s talk about that.

If you head on up above this post you will see my response to Geisha who also is battling fibroids. There is some good info there for you to start you off in the right direction.

The thing is I think that eleven fibroids is certainly going to be something you need to tackle with alot of determination and positive mind set. I’ve just posted to kara hume above about seeking help from a Chinese Medicine Practioner.

This might seem like it’s my answer to everything but it isn’t. However without it you are much further behind than need be. Holistic herbs are not the only answer but they can have incredible impact on your health.

The Chinese have studied herbal medicine for thousands of years and fertility was very important back in the days of the dynasties etc. Producing children to the King was the be all and end all, hence the massive knowledge base the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practioner has to impart. There is some 2000 plus years of knowledge, modern medicing although brilliant, pales in comparison in terms of ‘experience’.

So getting some specific herbs to help target your fibroids and boost other aspects of your reproductive health would certainly be the one thing I’d do next. Accupuncture has been shown in actual trials to help increase the chances of conceiving.

So try to find a sense of renewed hope and motiviation and take some ‘alternative’ action to get the dream you want.

Goodluck adny.

27 Michelle { 11.07.08 at 12:39 pm }

Hi develyn,
Thanks for taking the time to visit and thanks for your question.

I think the best thing you can do is go to your doctor to get the ‘pain’ you describe checked out if it persists. A tender chest area can be a symptom of pregnancy but your description sounds somewhat different.

Please seek advice from your doctor. Feel free to ask more questions if need be.

As a side note: Your comment was edited slightly to prevent certain types of spam.

28 Michelle { 11.07.08 at 12:54 pm }

Hi Sally,
Nice to have you at my blog.

HPV and Ascus have not in themselves been known to cause fertility issues in women. There are of course much more serious consequences that HPV can have and I trust you have sought very specific professional help regarding that.

I wonder if the colposcopy results were normal? If so then I’m relieved for you.

The main issue you have from what you’ve told me so far is your irregular cycle, that is an indication that your reproductive health can be improved.

I’ve said many times before that women whose cylce falls well outside the norm length-wise will have a four times less chance of conceiving than with a normal cycle. So it is important to try and balance your hormones and get a cycle that is consistently regular.

Here are some suggestions I gave Lucifera in a post above on the way forward from here, this is a great place for you to start:

Sally, if you have more questions feel free to ask me here.

Goodluck.

hi my name is Natasha, I am 31 years old. I have not been able to concieve for a year now, I did a dye test which showed that I had an infection in my left fallopian tube. Also in the blood tests it was discovered that my prolactin is high- for which I have been taking Cabergoline tablets to lower it. But the most worrying was the Fact that One hormone level which indicates how many eggs I have are left in my body is Very high- which indicates that at 31 my eggs are almost depleted and I might reach Premature Menopause!!!! It has really scared me- Could this be true? Also my doc says that I should do a Laproscopy and block the infected tube, And then try In Uterine Insemination. What are the risks of all this? And do you think it would work? If you could suggest what course of action I should take and if there is any natural remedy that could help? Thank you.

34 Michelle { 12.07.08 at 12:32 pm }

Hi Rebecca, Thanks for posting your question.

Regarding herbs and supplements, I cannot stress them strongly enough. The thing that interests me the most in what you’ve written though is what I interpret to be missed periods, the ’skipping’ you mention. Two things come straight to mind, you are either getting pregnant and then perhaps miscarrying hence the ‘ten times worse’ or you simply have an irregular cycle which is a symptom of hormonal imbalance to name but one possible cause.

I will assume that you’re not miscarrying as you would no doubt be performing pregnancy tests and would know although that is not fail safe and indeed if your hormone levels are low you could be missing that…I wonder how long it is between your cycle and the next when you skip?

So given there is some irregularity tells you that your body is not in its optimum state to conceive. HPV shouldn’t be causing you any real fertility issues but if it’s passed to your husband that has been known to cause decreased sperm quality.

Any medication can interfere with the balance of your overall health and that can include reproductive health. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you though that your HPV medicine is critical! You need to not let that worry you but rather understand that you need to put every possible coin you can into your fertility bank account as there are so many things that can draw it down everyday.

Simple things like smoking, coffee and a few glasses of wine will not ‘add’ to your chances of getting pregnant. Herbs, supplements, meditation, gentle exercise, correct body weight etc will add to your chances.

You need to get some blood tests and herbs underway and likewise for your husband. Seeings that you are open to natural medicine you would do well to speak to a natural fertility specialist.

So some tasks for you are to make an appointment for some comprehensive blood tests and to locate a natural fertility specialist or the closest thing to that…even a naturopath that specialises in women’s health. The ultimate would be though to find a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who can help you through acupuncture and herbs.

I wish you all the best and please don’t hesitate to post more questions if you need to.

Hi Sage,
Great to have you posting on my blog.

It’s great to hear that your cycle is now regular, that combined with being young you could find yourself conceiving sooner rather than later.

You mention that you predicted when you will ovulate…I hope you did that via an ovulation test, any other way could be halving your chances of conceiving.

So timing your conception attempts two days before ovulation is perfect, well done! Don’t worry too much about trying to conceive after ovulation, there are studies that show that no conceptions occur that way…doesn’t mean it’s never happened though.:)

What you do need to be sure of though is that ovulation is over before stopping trying so a few attempts after your ovulation date can’t really do any harm.

How soon you’ll know you’re pregnant is the question asked over and over again by many women who are trying to get pregnant. It really isn’t a set a rule that you can go by, every one is different. You’re body might produce a high level of HCG that can be detected in your urine earlier than others. So it really does depend. You can get pregnancy tests that are able to detect smaller amounts of HCG than others so if you want to start testing before your period is overdue try to seek out those better tests.

Regarding your second post about having a regular cycle: Yes a regular cycle does increase your chances of getting pregnant but don’t be disheartened if it still takes awhile…even as a young healthy fertile couple your chances in any given month are still around only 25%. So be a little patient and do lots of things to promote your reproductive health further. Preconception care supplements and healthy lifestyle habits will go a long way in helping you conceive.

Lots of baby dust to you too.

36 Michelle { 12.07.08 at 1:35 pm }

Hi Simona,
Welcome to my blog and thanks for stopping by.

I definitely would be asking for blood tests after 18 months, they can’t harm anything and can truly give you a good indication of what areas might need improving.

You mention your doctor suggested you lose weight that is an excellent recommendation. Although you are obviously not significantly overweight, just being a little bit overweight can actually tip the scales out of your favour.

Carrying extra weight around the middle can negatively impact your hormones and overall chances of getting pregnant quite a bit; there are human studies that prove this. So dropping some weight is a great place to start.

If you’re actively trying to conceive please don’t go on any really strict diet or ‘quick’ weight loss plan. These can interfere with your nutritional balance significantly and also release toxins into your system too quickly which you don’t want impacting on the health of your eggs.

Also exercising hard will deplete your nutritional stores too so don’t go jogging like crazy (like I did) and make the mistake of thinking you’re doing the right thing when in fact you could be making things worse. Some brisk walks for thirty minutes every other day combined with a good healthy diet should do the trick.

I hope that helps and gives you a place to start. Feel free to come back and post your progress and ask any further questions you might need to.

Good luck, I hope this month is your lucky one.

37 Michelle { 12.07.08 at 1:55 pm }

Hi Natasha,
Welcome.

I’m sorry to hear you have an infection and that you’ve been told you might experience premature menopause.

The egg reserve is often determined by measuring FSH, I’d be interested to know what you result was. 10 to 13 mIU/ml is an indication that you would have a weak reserve and if it’s over 13 then this is considered very difficult to stimulate. Try not to panic though that won’t help you, I know that is easier said than done.

Given you have some clear indications from your doctor that there are some obvious issues you are best to keep following their advice. That being said you owe it to yourself to do as much research on your own as possible. Being informed puts the power back in your hands and you can make better choices.

I suggest you most certainly obtain a second opinion from a qualified fertility specialist not your gynaecologist but a fertility specialist, there is a difference in their training.

At the same time you could seek out a specialist who is an expert in herbal medicine to treat fertility issues. A traditional Chinese medicine expert is ideal. Failing that a herbalist or naturopath will be able to assist.

There are many natural health specialists who will claim to be able to help bring your FSH levels down to a reasonable level; I believe some can as, along with the many other studies I’ve read, I have seen studies that have shown this. I don’t wish to give you false hope but rather facts and this sort of thing being achieved is more likely to occur if you seek out the best natural health practitioner you can find.

I hope this has helped you in some way and I wish you lots of luck. Keep posting back here with any further questions you might have.

38 Verley { 12.12.08 at 12:45 pm }

Hi! my name is verley. My husband and I are trying to have a second child. Problem we have is our age becos some people said once we get to 40s thats it, falling pregnant will be very slim. I am 45 and he is 54. We both non smokers.
We had our first child when i was 33yrs old after a year of trying after i had laparascopy operation due to my left tube blocked with scarring and adhersions.
4 years later I did a second laparoscopy to try for the second child. My gyn specialist said that my tubes are fine but there are some scarring and adhersions which they removed them. I still remember when he told me that i will be able to fall pregnant within 3- 6mths . I was so happy i could hardly wait for the time to come but as months and years went by and still nothing happened i started to get frustrated and worried as my biological clock is running out unfortunately. Ever since i had the last laparosopy which is 7yrs ago we still havent succeeded.
We found out that my husbands sperm mortility is low and abnormality is high and his sperm count is normal.
My husband and I both started taking vitamin and minerals supplement and as for myself i am keeping myself healthy and fit and as for him he still having a baul with his mates at the pub drinking 6-7cans everyday after work. I tried my hardest telling him to slow down but it drives him mad. he doesn’t want me to controlled his lifestyle and his health. He even rolled his eyes when i brought up the baby issue and organic stuff. I know this sounds crazy but i dont know what we are going to end up having. I dont want to argue anymore as i’ve had enough arguing over this . How am i supposed to deal him when his head is as hard as a brickwall.
Anyway i am now a vegetarian and i quit alcohol, caffeine and dairy. I wont give up until i can convinced my husband to stop drinking. Is there a chance for me to conceive at my age? Please help me! Thank you! I’m sorry if this is a long letter. hoping to hear from you soon!

We had our daughter when i was 33yrs old

39 Verley { 12.12.08 at 1:03 pm }

Hi
There are things i didn’t mentioned to you in my last letter about my menstruation. I still have my normal periods and my cycle length is around 30-32.
I have ovulated this month and hopefully we can get our luck to conceived soon.
Thank you again!
Verley

Have been trying to get pregnant after a miscarriage ( ectopic pregnancy. I have done treatments for up to six months not yet happening Any advise what to try. I work too many shifts does that affect me

41 ISHA { 12.29.08 at 3:19 pm }

HI I AM TRYING TO GET PREGNANT FOR PAST ONE YEARS
I HAVE IRREGULAR PERIODS. I TRIED TO CACULATE MY OVULATION DAYS AND ALSO TRIED TO INTERCOURSE.BUT BAD LUCK NO RESULTS.
PLEASE ADVISE

42 Michelle { 12.31.08 at 2:16 pm }

Hi Verley, Thanks for stopping by. I apologise for the delay in replying, December is always a busy month for us all.

Your age of course is a significant factor when it comes to conceiving. At 45 it isn’t impossible but of course your chances are greatly decreased. The fact you are ovulating is great. You sound as though you are doing a great deal to increase your chances and that is fabulous, you’d be amazed at how many people just won’t take those steps.

It is a shame that your husband doesn’t see things the way you do. The best thing you can do is encourage him to take in all the ‘extra’ things to try and compensate for unhealthy lifestyle habits. Zinc is a major issue when it comes to sperm quality so if you can encourage him to take a zinc taste test and then the supplements required to restore levels then that would be a great help.

You can get a zinc taste test from your local health store specialist who can talk you through how to perform it at home. You must be careful with zinc though, the correct dose should be decided after the taste test in consultation with a natural health store consultant.

I assume IVF is not on your agenda. All things considered I would suggest you add acupuncture to your regime. That along with high quality Chinese herbs prescribed by a highly experienced Chinese herbalist would be ideal.

Keeping your weight in a healthy range, lowering stress and adding gentle exercise to your day will help you. The odds aren’t in your favor but ‘quality’ of eggs does win out over quantity so don’t completely give up hope.

Verley, I wish you all the very best of luck.

43 Michelle { 12.31.08 at 2:28 pm }

Hi Bobby,
Thanks for your question. I’m sorry to hear that you had a miscarriage. You mention that you’ve been doing treatment for six months, I wonder what that treatment is, knowing this can help me understand your situation better.

You say that you work too many shifts. If you are experiencing lack of sleep that will affect you enormously! Sleep disruption and lack of sleep generally will play havoc with your entire body which of course includes you reproductive system. If there is a way to try and get at least seven hours of good restful sleep then that should be your aim.

I always direct people to the basics first such as preconception care. Have a read of my answer to Joy on 11.01.08 at 9:16 am above, it covers a great deal of detail of some of the things you can do to to increase your chances of conceiving. All that advise applies to both you and your partner.

Good luck. Let me know if you have further questions.

44 Michelle { 12.31.08 at 2:35 pm }

Hi Isha,
Welcome to my blog. Irregular periods are an indication that your reproductive health is not in an ideal state. Your hormones are most likely out of balance.

As I’ve suggested to Bobby, you should read my answer to Joy above on 11.01.08 at 9:16 am to get an idea of some basic things you and your partner need to undertake if you aren’t already.

Given you’ve been trying for over one year it is time to see a doctor. You need to have a thorough set of blood tests so you can see where in particular you might have a problem, ie too much estrogen or not enough etc. When you have those results I’d be interested to hear about them. If your results come back fairly normal then your lifestyle habits and that of your partners will need adjusting; it can be all the little things you do everyday that soon add up to push the scales out of your favor of conceiving; but one step at a time. Read my answer to Joy and make an appointment to request blood tests. Let me know what you discover and I’m happy to help you in any way further that I can.

Best of luck.

Thank you to all who have visited and left their questions here. The number of questions I’m receiving is becoming too difficult to answer personally.

There are many aspects to getting pregnant and so many things that can negatively affect your chances. I apologise that I don’t currently have the available time or resources to answer all your questions personally.

Read this post and decide if you are going to leave no stone unturned like I did or be left wondering and searching. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. http://www.aboutgettingpregnant.com/blog/cant-get-pregnant.html

In your opinion Michelle, which are the best days to conceive after your period. My cycle is a clockwork 28 days. My doctor says to attempt to conceive every 72 hours after my period should help; should I also remain still after each of these occasions to maximise my chances?

Hi, I’ve been trying to get pregnant for 9 months now. I’ve read on blogs, and medical sites that taking prenatal pills will help give you the vitiamins you need to maybe get pregnant, but then I also see that taking liquid geritol could help too?

I’ve actually been using my ovualtion calendar to see when I may ovulate as well, but the last time I have my check up which was in August, the doctor told me that I had a small cyst on my cervix that was common and go away. Would this be the reason why I am not pregnant?

Hi, I have a 10 yr old daughter… Had an abortion in year 2000, we then after tried for the second child but still had no luck. I went and checked out my inner system and everything seem to be ok. My tubes are cleared and the ovaries are fine, but still can’t figure out why. We then thought it was my husband’s problem, but after we got we got divorced almost 2 yrs ago and he got re-married with a baby on the way… Now, I’m seeing that its my problem? Lately, I’ve been taking MACA vitamins… would my chance of conceiving be higher?

I’m 22 years old and I’ve been trying to conceive for about 6-7 months now. I usually have intercourse in the middle of my cycle, as I read it is the best time to conceive. I also try to lie on my back for as much as I can after intercourse to maximize my chances. Nothing happened so far… I really want to have a baby. I take Folic Acid on daily basis… But are there any vitamins I can take to help me to get pregnant? I hope to hear from you.

Hi Michelle,
Thank you so much for all your information on getting pregnant. It has been very beneficial. Just wanted to ask you what you think about taking clomid late in the cases of women who have 34+ days cycles. I am a 34-day cycler and i have been taking clomid from days 5-9. However after 3 attempts and NOTHING…my doctor moved the days to 10-14 because my ovulation was coming on day 19/20 and he said I am taking too early since i have a cycle that is so long i should wait out 4 more days than usual and we see what happens. Does this make any sense to you?
I have just finished taking on day 10-14 and I am waiting to see if his idea was a good one.
What are your thoughts on this?

Hi Michelle,

Female, Age: 28 years, No children.
Married for 2 years.
I had ultrasound suggesting polycystic ovaries in Oct 2008. My regular period cycle is either 30 days or 42-45 days. Some months it is 30 days cycle and if atall it crosses 30 days, then periods happen by between 42-45 days. This trend is regular for me. Recently I missed my 2 periods. I had period on 7-Jan-2009 and then went to consult a doctor around 17-Mar-2009 for delay in menses. She discussed the case and gave some hormonal tablets that would induce menses. She told me that I can wait till 23-Mar-09 and then see her if menses still do not occur. I waited and had no menses but only spotting for 2-3 days (27-29 Mar) and so went to see her on 31-Mar-2009. She got some serum LDH tested which came out to be 5.4 and she also asked me to get color ultrasound done. Ultrasound measured endometrial thickness of 10 mm on 31-Mar-2009 and I had mensus on 01-Apr-2009, the very next day.

Doctor said that my LDH (5.4) was high (referring to PCOS and said this needs to be addressed)

She also said 10mm endometrial thickness was very high and that I should again get a ultrasound done between (day 1-day 4) of the coming menses to check/monitor the thickeness.
Suggest if i should really undergo next ultrasound or if i should change doctor?

I want to conceive (though not very desperate), and doctor prescribed me Yasmin 21-day tablet course mentioning that this will treat my hormonal issues. I asked her if this was kind of contraceptive, she mentioned no this is targetting for getting your hormonal balance and that next period would be exactly 28 days. Later when I read package insert, it mentioned this was a contraceptive and I am just expecting my period now.

- After this I have consulted another doctor who said to continue Yasmin for 2 more months and also to take along OVACARE for next 2 months. Aren’t these 2 medications for contrary cause - Yasmin is contraceptive and Ovacare opposite.

Please advice …if i should give my system a natural path …than taking these medicinces

Hi, I am turning 31 this year and my husband and I have been trying to have a child for the past 4 years. As you can imagine, it has been a very emotional and frustrating road so far. I have had tests done, had a laparoscopy done over a year ago as well. My cycles are very irregular, sometimes upto a month late. Its been determined that I have polycystic ovaries, and when the laparoscopy was done, they found endometriosis as well which was cleaned away? A month and a half ago the doc put me on postoval to try to regulate my cycles and hormones. Please can you advise me of what else I can be doing, I’ve noticed that I am gaining weight although I am not overweight as such - I used to do strenuous exercise which the doc asked that I stop so I recently started yoga. I also am experiencing terrible skin problems over the last few years. Can you also suggest herbs? We are now considering IVF.

Hello…
Ok so here is my deal, I have 3 kids from a prior relationship and now my husband and I are trying toget pregnant, but he has never had children. He is 35 and I am 30, but I have also had a miscarriage in 2003 at 8wks gestation, I have had HPVx3 with cryotherapy treatment and I did have hypothyroidism, but all my levels are normal based on last physical in March 2009. My doctor says that all seems well inside of me to conceive, but I am unsure if it is me or him. Any recommendations, we have been trying for almost 7 months and nothing. We would like to have atleast just 1 baby possibly 2, but we would both be extremely happy with 1. My menstruations is complete normal exactly 28 days like clockwork, we have even checked for ovulation times and have increased our attempts to conceive on those days, even timing it to be in mornings. I hoping you could point us in the right direction if anything is wrong with him or is it me??

Hello. Im 23 years old, married, and I’ve been trying to get pregnant for 2 years now with no luck. My periods have always been irregular sometimes they’re 7 days long sometimes shorter. Sometimes they are heavy sometimes they arent. And sometimes they clot also. I dont know what the problem could be, but ive been very stressed out about a few things and this is one of the biggest things because everyone around me is having a baby and i want one really badly. I had an ovarion cyst back in 06 but the doctors basically just gave me codine for the pain so im not to sure what happened with that. i havent been to the doctor in a while but the last time i went they said i have a lot of little cysts around my ovary. sould that be a problem? also i just recently quit, but i used to smoke cigarettes. Im just really trying to figure out why with 2 years of trying, i havent become pregnant yet.

Hi Michelle,
I have two beautiful sons aged 3 and 5. We would love to have another child and have been trying for the past year without success. I have a regular menstrual cycle and normally ovulate on day 16…. ! I take folic acid and a multivitamin especially made for women trying to conceive - I also take staminigro (as does hubby). My BMI is 24 and I excercise. I had no problems falling pregnant with the boys (took 3 months)…. and I am now 30 years old. Hubby is 38. What would you advise we do???

I am 33, and my 1st husband and I tried for 11 years to get pregnant with no luck. We went to fertility doctors and did the clomid (6 cycles in a row, increasing dosage each time). All that ever did was make me sick with flu like symptoms each month around my ovulation date. I am now remarried, and my husband and I have been trying for over a year now. I have been taking Vitex for about 2 months (steady) and also taking folic acid every day. What other suppliments to you suggest other than the Vitamins A, C and E?

Hi Michelle,

Good to know that you are helping many women in claryfing their doubts regarding conception. I have one question.

Does taking NSAID (I take Nimesulide) 1st and 2nd day of menstrual cycle regularly to get rid of severe dysmenorrhea hamper in any way to conceive and in implantation?

Thank you in advance.
